# Why does a playable sound come as a video?

> Figma can only play audio through a video. So when you want a sound that actually plays, Sound Kit turns the audio into a small video node for you. Attaching a sound to a layer is different — that just tags the layer and stays silent.

> **Note:** Two outcomes, one button. When you click Add to Canvas with a layer selected, "Attach to {layer}" is a silent tag (no video, no playback), while "Create a new video node" makes the playable video this article is about.

> **Note:** You hear the video in Present (prototype) mode on desktop, not while editing the canvas. Sounds do not play in the Figma mobile app.

> **Paid feature:** Creating a playable video node uploads a video, which needs a paid Figma plan (Professional, Organization, Education, or Enterprise). Browsing and previewing sounds is free.

## Steps

1. In the Browse tab, find a sound and click Add to Canvas.
2. In the "Add to canvas" dialog, choose "Create a new video node" — this is the option that actually plays sound. (Picking "Attach to {layer}" instead just records the sound on the layer; it adds no video and stays silent.)
3. Sound Kit converts the audio into a small video and drops a new, playable node on your canvas. The video is the sound — this is normal.
4. Click Present to play the prototype, and the video node plays your sound. Nothing else to set up — Sound Kit handles the conversion for you.
