# How do I check whether a set of sounds belongs together?

> Put your candidates in the comparison tray, then run the family fit check. It names the one that drifts, says what it drifts on, and by how much.

> **Note:** Each sound has to be listened to, so the check runs on a capped number of them and shows progress. If a sound cannot be read it is named, never quietly dropped.

> **Tip:** Three or four sounds is the sweet spot. Too few and there is no reliable middle to compare against, which the report will tell you.

## Steps

1. Open the Browse tab and turn on comparison mode in the toolbar.
2. Tick the sounds you are considering as one family.
3. Click Family fit in the comparison tray at the bottom.
4. Read the findings. Each one names a sound, the thing it drifts on — length, brightness, or loudness — and the size of the gap.
5. Swap the odd one out for something closer, or keep it if the difference is deliberate.
