# Do I need a paid plan to add sound?

> Only for sound that actually plays. Browsing, previewing, and editing sounds are free on any plan. To get a node that plays in a prototype, Sound Kit turns the audio into a video — and Figma only lets you upload video on a paid plan.

> **Paid feature:** A node that plays sound is a video, and Figma only lets you upload video on a paid plan (Professional, Organization, Education, or Enterprise). So choosing "Create a new video node" needs a paid plan. On the free Starter plan you can still browse, preview, edit, and silently tag a layer — and you can present sounds someone already added — but you cannot create new playable nodes.

> **Note:** Attaching a sound to a layer is free, but it is a silent tag: the layer's design doesn't change and nothing plays. Only a video node makes a sound audible.

## Steps

1. Browse, preview, and edit sounds on the Browse and Create tabs — all free, even on the Starter plan.
2. On the Browse tab, find a sound and click "Add to Canvas". If a layer is selected, the "Add to canvas" dialog appears.
3. Pick "Attach to {layer}" to tag the layer silently (free, but it never plays), or "Create a new video node" to drop a playable node.
4. Creating a video node needs a paid Figma plan: Professional, Organization, Education, or Enterprise. The free Starter plan can't upload video.
5. Check your plan in Figma under your account or team settings.
