# It says the layer isn’t on a Motion timeline

> Keyframes need a timeline — place the layer inside a frame.

Figma Motion keyframes live on a **timeline**, and a timeline belongs to a frame. If a layer isn’t inside a frame, there’s nowhere for its keyframes to go.

1. Place the layer(s) you want to animate inside a **frame**.
2. Select them again (with your path) and Apply.

> **Note:** The plugin warns you before applying when the selected layer has no timeline yet.
