# How do I update a chart after inserting it?

> Select the chart on the canvas, change what you need in the editor, then press Update SVG. It replaces the chart in place — same position, size, rotation, name and frame — rather than adding a second one.

## Before you start

- A chart you inserted earlier with FigmaCharts.

> **Note:** If nothing happens, check what is selected. No node selected means the selection was empty; Selected node is not a Figma Chart means you have a layer inside the chart, or a layer FigmaCharts did not make.

> **Careful:** An update rebuilds the chart as a fresh layer. Renamed sublayers, styles you applied to its vectors and prototype links do not survive — do that kind of tidying after your last update.

> **Tip:** Updates never count against the free insert allowance. Only brand-new charts do.

> **Pro feature:** Reopening an existing chart to change it needs a paid plan. On the free plan the editor shows the chart read-only with an Upgrade to Edit button in place of the update controls.

## Steps

1. Click the chart on the canvas with the plugin open. Select the chart layer itself, on its own — the plugin ignores multiple selections and anything nested inside the chart.
2. It reopens in the editor with the data and settings it was inserted with. The Width and Height it shows are read off the canvas, so if you scaled the chart in Figma those are the numbers you see.
3. Make your changes, then press Update SVG — or Update PNG if you inserted it as an image. These replace the + SVG and + PNG buttons whenever you are working on a chart that is already on the canvas.
4. To change the size as well, set Width and Height under Appearance in the Configuration tab before you update. The chart is redrawn at that size; leave them alone and it keeps whatever size you dragged it to in Figma.
