# How do I paste from Excel or Google Sheets?

> Copy the cells in your spreadsheet, then either paste them straight into the data table or drop them into the Import tab and press Parse & Apply Data.

## Before you start

- A chart open in the editor.

> **Note:** Pasting into the grid replaces what is already there and stops at the edge of the table — it will not add rows or columns. If your spreadsheet block is bigger than the chart, use the Import tab instead.

> **Pro feature:** The Import sub-tab needs a paid plan. Pasting directly into the data table does not.

> **Careful:** Every row has to have the same number of columns. A ragged selection is rejected with a message naming the row that does not match, and nothing is applied.

> **Tip:** Select cells with ⌘-click or shift-click and press ⌘C to copy them back out as tab-separated text you can paste into a spreadsheet.

## Steps

1. Select the cells in your spreadsheet and copy them as usual. Include the header row — the plugin uses it for your series names.
2. To paste over numbers you already have, open the Data tab, hold ⌘ (Ctrl on Windows) and click the cell where the paste should start. Then press ⌘V. The values fill down and across from that cell.
3. To bring in a whole new table instead, open the Import sub-tab, paste into the Or Paste Data box and press Parse & Apply Data.
4. The plugin works out the format for you. It recognises JSON, and for spreadsheet text it detects whether the columns are separated by tabs, commas, semicolons or pipes.
5. The first mostly-text column becomes your labels and every mostly-numeric column becomes a series. A success message tells you how many rows came through.
6. For a Sankey, network or tree chart a Map Columns step appears first. Check the preview of the first five rows, point each of your columns at the right field, and press Apply Mapping.
