# How do I type my own data in?

> Open the Data tab and type straight into the table — the first column holds your labels and every other column is a series. The preview redraws as you type.

## Before you start

- A chart open in the editor.

> **Tip:** Leave a cell empty for a genuine gap. An empty cell is stored as no value, which draws a break in a line — it is not the same as typing 0.

> **Note:** Anything that is not a number is kept as text, so a stray currency symbol or a comma will not be charted. Type plain numbers and set the formatting in the Configuration tab instead.

> **Tip:** Some chart types do not show a table at all. Trees, Sankeys, heatmaps and calendars need a differently shaped editor, and the Data tab switches to it automatically.

## Steps

1. Open the Data tab in the editor. It opens on Manual Edit, with Sample Data and Import beside it.
2. Click any cell and type. The Label column is what appears along the axis or beside each slice; the columns after it are your numbers.
3. Rename a series by typing over its column heading and pressing Enter. That name is what the legend and tooltips show.
4. Use + Add Row under the table for another category, and the + at the right-hand end of the heading row for another series.
5. Remove things with the × beside a column heading or the bin icon at the end of a row. The plugin keeps one row and one series back, so a chart is never left with nothing to draw.
6. Press Reset Data, beside the sub-tabs at the top of the panel, if you want the chart back on the sample numbers it started with.
