# How does the data table work?

> It behaves like a small spreadsheet: sort columns, drag rows, select cells, find and replace, undo — with a toolbar above it and a right-click menu on almost everything.

## Before you start

- A chart whose Data tab shows the table editor.

> **Careful:** Clear All empties the table back to a single row and a single series. Undo will bring your data back, but only while the editor stays open.

> **Tip:** Export CSV downloads exactly what the table shows, which is the quickest way to get numbers back out of a chart someone else built.

> **Note:** Above about 200 rows the table is built in the background and shows a progress bar with the row and series count. The chart itself is unaffected — this is only the editor catching up.

> **Note:** Transform chips are a preview until you press Apply, and they are cleared if you switch to a different chart type.

## Steps

1. The toolbar above the table carries Undo, Redo, Clear All and Export CSV. ⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z work too, and the plugin remembers your last twenty edits.
2. Sort by clicking the arrows in a column heading. Each click cycles ascending, then descending, then back to your original order.
3. Reorder rows by dragging the grip handle at the left of a row. Tick the boxes in the first column to select rows, then press Delete in the toolbar to remove them together.
4. Right-click for the rest. On a row you get Insert Above, Insert Below, Duplicate and Delete Row; on a column heading, Sort Column and Delete Series; on a cell, Clear Cell.
5. Select a block of cells — ⌘-click to add one, shift-click to extend — then right-click inside it for Multiply by…, Add… and Subtract… to apply the same arithmetic to every selected number.
6. Press ⌘H for find and replace. Type in Find…, watch the match counter, then use Replace for the current match or All for every one. Esc closes it.
7. Use the Transform chips above the table for changes you want to preview before committing: Filter, Sort, Transpose, Fill Gaps and Scale. The preview updates as you configure each chip; press Apply to write the result into the table.
