# What are Essential, Common and Advanced?

> They are three levels of chart furniture — titles, legends, axes, labels. Essential strips it all away, Common is the standard chart, Advanced turns everything on.

> **Tip:** The mode is a starting point, not a lock. Switching modes never writes over the options stored on the chart, so you can move between the three while you decide.

> **Note:** Every tile in the gallery is drawn in Essential, so a chart always looks barer in the grid than it will once you open it.

## Steps

1. Open any chart. The Essential, Common and Advanced control sits in the editor header, to the left of the insert buttons. Charts open on Common.
2. Choose Essential for the marks and nothing else — no title, legend, tooltip, axes, gridlines, data labels or animation. This is the mode for dashboard tiles and sparklines.
3. Choose Common for an ordinary chart: title, legend, tooltip, axes and gridlines on, data labels off.
4. Choose Advanced when you want everything. It adds the subtitle and the data labels on top of what Common gives you.
5. The Configuration tab follows whichever mode you are in, so once the shape is roughly right you can carry on switching individual options off and on by hand.
