# Why did my colours change when I picked a chart style?

> Because that style carried its own palette. There are two colour controls and a clear order between them: a palette you pick yourself always wins, then the chart style, then the library default.

> **Tip:** A style that carries no palette of its own leaves your colours completely untouched. That is deliberate — restyling a chart should not silently throw away a palette you chose for the whole document.

> **Note:** The same order applies to pie, donut and Sankey charts, which some chart libraries colour through a separate setting.

## Steps

1. There are two separate controls in the Appearance group. Colour palette changes only colours. Chart style changes the whole look, and some styles include a palette.
2. The order is fixed. A colour palette you chose yourself beats everything else.
3. Next comes the chart’s own colours — the palette a chart style brought with it, or colours you set on individual series by hand.
4. Last comes the chart library’s default palette, used only when nothing above applies.
5. So if a style changed your colours, pick your palette again from the Colour palette control. Because your explicit choice sits at the top of the order, it will stick.
