# How do I set up AI with my own API key?

> Open AI settings, pick Claude, OpenAI or Gemini, and paste a key from that provider. The plugin has no AI of its own — it talks to your account, so you keep control of the cost and the data.

## Before you start

- An API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google AI Studio.

> **Careful:** Requests are billed to your account with the provider, at their rates. FigmaCharts does not resell or mark up AI usage, and it cannot cap your spend — set limits with your provider if that matters to you.

> **Note:** AI is the one part of the plugin that needs a network connection. Everything else — building, styling and inserting charts — works offline.

> **Pro feature:** The AI features need a paid FigmaCharts plan in addition to your own provider key.

## Steps

1. Open the AI settings and choose a provider: Claude, OpenAI or Gemini.
2. Paste your API key and save. The key is stored on your machine, not in the Figma file, so it is not shared with anyone you send the file to.
3. The AI features unlock once a key is present — chart generation, chart editing and chart-type recommendations.
