# How do I generate a chart by describing it?

> Press AI Generate on the home screen and describe the chart you want in plain language. You get a real chart in the editor, with data, which you can then edit like any other.

## Before you start

- An AI provider key saved in settings.

> **Tip:** Being specific about the shape of your data does more for the result than being specific about the styling — the plugin can restyle a chart in seconds, but picking the wrong chart type means starting again.

> **Note:** The data it invents is placeholder data. Treat it as a starting layout, never as a source of numbers.

## Steps

1. On the home screen, press AI Generate.
2. Describe what you want. Say what the chart is about, roughly what the numbers look like, and anything that matters about the styling — for example, "quarterly revenue by region for four regions over two years, stacked bars, muted colours".
3. A chart comes back with sample data already in it. Open it in the editor and replace the numbers with your own on the Data tab.
